Tell us briefly about your background & how you got started in your medium.
I am a self-taught contemporary/abstract artist. I’ve always been a creative soul since childhood. Originally started working in pastels and charcoal. Eventually I moved on to acrylics and texture mediums.
How does your medium inform your viewpoint? Or what do you like most about your medium?
I primarily work in acrylic paint and some inks with the use of different mediums to create different effects and movement across the canvas.
Who or what have been your artistic inspirations?
I am inspired by all things nature and our emotional responses to it. I am particularly drawn to water and the coast. There is a calming effect that it provides for me. In my work you will often find coastal landscapes and warm neutral tones found in nature.
Do you have a favorite piece in your portfolio?
This is a tough question for me. Painting is a very personal experience for me. Each piece that I create is a particular moment, a memory or emotion that I’ve had. With each collection I paint though, there always seems to be a piece that speaks to me more than the others. My hope is that the viewers will have a similar experience – invoking a memory or just a smile.
What would be your advice to artists just starting out in your medium?
The biggest piece of advice I can give is to just keep going. You will have great days and some not so great days. You have to create a bunch of bad stuff to get to the good. The key is to always keep creating. Also remember why you started creating in the first place. That will help get over the hump of the bad days. The worst thing we can do as an artist is to compare ourselves/our work to others. Stop comparing your journey to others. We are all on a different path. And comparison will kill creativity. Just enjoy the ride.
