Marjorie is a full-time artist working in her home studio in Mechanicsburg. She attended UCSD majoring in fine art, and has taken many art classes over the years. She started her art career doing murals and faux finishing at The Decorative Art Studio, which she founded in 1998. She was selected to paint murals for several Harrisburg Symphony Showhouses. After starting a family, she dabbled in glass mosaic and traveled to Venice, Italy, for a workshop at Orsoni glass. Her work then evolved into using shells in her mosaics. In 2021 after her three daughters went to college, she started painting with oils. And recently acrylics and gold leaf. Currently, she enjoys hanging out with her husband and two rescue dogs.

Tell us briefly about your background & how you got started in your medium.

I have loved art and being creative since I was a child. I have attended many college and art school classes over the years. I have worked in ceramics, mosaics, and many mediums of paint. For the past two years, I have been working in oils.

How does your medium inform your viewpoint? Or what do you like most about your medium?

Oils have allowed me to create art that is true to my vision. I love the vibrant, luminous colors and the ability to blend and soften organic shapes since they stay wet for long periods.

Who or what have been your artistic inspirations?

I find inspiration in Georgia O’keefe’s work, but more recently, the Dutch masters and John Singer Sargent. Nature is often my biggest inspiration.

Do you have a favorite piece in your portfolio?

My favorite piece I sold last year was a 30″ x 30″ oil titled Calla Lily.

What would be your advice to artists just starting out in your medium?

My advice to an artist starting in oil is to find a master in history that you admire and practice
coping their work. Then practice practice, practice to find your style.
