Richard H. Neff

1. I am a mathematician that was introduced to oil painting during a required art class my senior year at Shippensburg University.  I have continued to painted since 1964. And I continue to enjoy the challenge to the right brain thinking involved in painting and music.

2. When painting, I seldom achieve first-time  acceptable results. And oil paints are easy to correct. I take satisfaction in using the same medium used by the original masters in the past.

3. As a copyist for over 10 years at the National Gallery of Art, I have been inspired by the original works of the impressionists of the 19th and 20th centuries.

4. Choosing a favorite piece that I have done would be a difficult chore since it varies with time. Currently, I am pleased with THE BRANCH STREAM painting.

5. My advice to beginning oil painters would be:  to strive for improvement with each painting and to search and develop your own style; don’t be disappointed if most of your work will be destroyed and/or painted over; study artists that you respect and whose work you admire; and above all, PAINT TO PLEASE YOURSELF NOT OTHERS.
