Tell us briefly about your background & how you got started in your medium.

I have been taking photos for most of my life, primarily for work as part of a career in communications. A more creative side to my photography began germinating (pun intended!) during the pandemic and evolved into my new business, The Farmer’s Daughter’s Flowers photography.

What do you like most about your medium?

The often serendipitous nature of it. I’ve gotten photos I love from both well-planned excursions and times when I went into my backyard with fifteen unplanned minutes in my day.

Who or what have been your artistic inspirations?

I draw inspiration from a variety of sources, but probably what you see reflected most often in my photos is my affection for poster art.

Do you have a favorite piece in your portfolio?

I feel like that’s asking if you have a favorite child! But I have to admit that I do — the first one I ever did, a bee on a coneflower called “Charging Station,” which is among those I have here at Cornerstone. It definitely has a poster art vibe; it’s a bit of a tribute to artist Peter Max, one of my favorites.

What would be your advice to artists just starting out in your medium?

Practice! Like most things in life, you get better by doing (and don’t be afraid of “doing it wrong.”) Take a class, follow photographers whose style you like, find books/videos/online sites you can refer to when questions crop up — and get out there with your camera.
