Tell us briefly about your background & how you got started in your medium.
I have been sketching most of my life, and have taken classes over the years to learn each medium. Watercolor classes inspired me to begin painting in earnest. Oil and acrylic painting classes followed. My curiosity about different methods of expression lead me to alcohol inks, caran d’ache and charcoal.
What do you like most about your medium?
Abstract acrylics are my current passion. Most of my work is non objective, but realism interests me too. Since acrylic paints dry quickly it makes it possible to complete a painting in a day. The bright pigment in most acrylic paints is exciting to me when I’m looking at a blank canvas and imagining the colors I can play with!
Who or what have been your artistic inspirations?
My artistic inspirations are some of the teachers I’ve encountered over the years, Friends, whom I’ve met through membership in various art associations, and family members who are artists, inspire me, and our talks about art and mutual interests are special to me. I’ve got an extensive library of art books that I like to read and re-read, there’s always something new I find when reading art magazines or books.
Do you have a favorite piece in your portfolio?
My favorite piece in my portfolio is “Poppies”, a watercolor and gouache on rice paper. Its a popular print and holds fond memories for me.
What would be your advice to artists just starting out in your medium?
Advice for anyone starting out would be to familiarize yourself with the medium you’re interested in, and experiment with different techniques. YouTube has unlimited tutorials on art styles, mediums, and help for the new artist. Its important to paint or sketch every day, that’s the only way you’ll improve, and your style can also change as you get more familiar with your medium! Join an art association to meet like-minded people. You’ll learn a lot by attending meetings, going to shows and participating!
