Tell us briefly about your background & how you got started in your medium.
I am a mathematician that was introduced to oil painting during a required art class at Shippensburg University. Having painted since 1964, I continue to enjoy the challenge of creating a piece of artwork.
What do you like most about your medium?
When painting, I seldom achieve first-time acceptable results. And oil paints are very easy to alter. I also like the smooth quality and versatility of the medium. And I take satisfaction in using the same medium used by the original masters of the impressionistic style.
Who or what have been your artistic inspirations?
As a copyist for over 10 years at the National Gallery of Art, I have been inspired by the original work of the impressionists of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Do you have a favorite piece in your portfolio?
Choosing a favorite piece that I have done would be a dynamic exercise. Currently, I am pleased with The Flooded Field painting.
What would be your advice to artists just starting out in your medium?
My advice to beginning oil painters would be: strive to search and develop your own style; don’t be disappointed if most of your work will be destroyed and/or painted over; study artists that you respect and whose work you admire; and above all, PAINT TO PLEASE YOURSELF NOT OTHERS.
